HOW TO RUN AN EFFECTIVE PRACTICE

NECESSITIES:

  1. Field.
  2. Players.
  3. Plan.
  4. Equipment.
  5. NO standing in lines.

PROPER HABITS FOR PLAYERS:

  1. Be on time.
  2. Properly dressed.
  3. Instant activity.
  4. Practice the way you play the game.
  5. Be coachable.
As a coach of youth soccer players, your main focus should be on:

PLAYER DEVELOPMENT

  • Players should participate in activities which are fun, challenging and competitive.
  • Players should be exposed to many positions on the field. Forward, midfield, defense, and even goalkeeper.
  • Results are secondary to player development.
  • Skills, skills, and more skills.
  • Between the ages of 9 and 13, players learn skills rapidly and fairly easily. Teach them well when they are young and they will be that much better when they are 17 and 18.
GENERAL ORGANIZATION OF A PRACTICE

1. WARM-UP

  • The warm-up should involve the ball.
  • Get the players physically and mentally ready to play.
  • Don't spend too much time on stretching exercises.
2. SKILLS DEVELOPMENT
  • Passing, receiving, dribbling.
  • Organize the players in working groups; 2's, 3's, 4's, etc. Get them going!
3. SMALL GROUP ACTIVITIES
  • Possession games: 3 vs 1, 4 vs 2, 5 vs 3.
4. FINISHING ACTIVITIES

5. TEAM ACTIVITIES

  • Offense vs defense
  • Team possession.
6. CONDITIONING
