TRYOUTS

Day 1

  1. Warm up: 10 - 15 minutes
  2. Small sided games: 30 - 40 minutes.
  3. 8 vs 8 half field: 60 minutes.
  4. Create tournament atmosphere where teams keep track of win/loss record.
  5. Speed test: 40 yard sprints.
  6. Bring the players in, briefly discuss the procedure, then gather bibs.
Day 2:
  1. Warm Up: 10 - 15 minutes.
  2. Small sided games: 30 minutes. Add conditions: Touch, dribble, connect passes.
  3. 8 vs 8 games: 60 minutes.
  4. Agility/fitness: shuttle runs.
  5. Bring players in, discuss process.
Day 3:
  1. Warm Up: 10 - 15 minutes.
  2. Small sided games: 30 minutes. Divide into A and B level groups.
  3. 11 vs 11 games: 60 minutes.
  4. Endurance test: Timed 8 laps around soccer field.
  5. Bring players in, discuss process.
  6. Make first cut. Final number plus bubble players. Have players call one phone number and check the list of players invited back for the final tryout.
Day 4:
  1. Warm Up: 10 - 15 minutes.
  2. Run normal training session. 45 min.. Topics; ball possession, attacking, defending, etc..
  3. 11 vs 11 game: 60 minutes.
  4. Bring players in, discuss process.
After the Tryouts:
  • All coaches within the age group need to sit down to discuss the teams and players.
  • Bay Oaks philosophy: At the younger ages, try to give everyone an opportunity to play. Become more selective at the U14 and older levels.
What To Look For In A Player:

Technical Ability

  • Soccer Intelligence: Ability to read the game, vision, making smart decisions.
  • Personality: Enjoyment of the game, involvement, aggressiveness, competitiveness.
  • Speed: Speed of play and speed of thought.
