FORMER BAY OAKS YOUTH REFEREE/PLAYER GOES TO HAWAII FOR FAR WEST REGIONALS
July 4, 2008
Youth soccer referees may think it is just a job where they can make a few bucks for referring some games on Saturdays in the fall, but one of our Bay Oaks youth referees has shown that it can be so much more than that. Kayla Rockwell (19), a former JLYSSL player and youth referee (MSC, Bay Oaks), recently was fortunate to get assigned as a referee at the USYS Far West Regionals in Hawaii.
Kayla was assigned to the referee team for the Under 18 girls final on June 22nd, in which she served as the fourth official. This is a first for any youth referee from our league. No youth referee from JLYSSL has ever achieved this level of success and Ms Rockwell is a proud accomplishment of our league's referee program. The trip to Far West Regionals is an all expenses paid trip for the youth referees that are selected. The Cal North referee team left SF on June 15th and returned on June 23rd. A week in Hawaii is a nice perk for a youth referee. Yes they have to work games all during the week but there is still down time to enjoy the Hawaiian playground.
This was the third time Kayla has gone to the Far West Regionals. Her other two trips were to Boise Idaho, and Las Vegas Nevada in 2006 and 2007. She was selected as District 4 Youth Referee of the Year in 2004 and has worked in tournaments and State Cup in Cal North for six years now. She played for Bay Oaks during four seasons of her youth soccer career.

U10 GIRLS PANTHERS WIN NORCAL STATE CUP CHAMPIONSHIP
November 27, 2007
Drama. Suspense. Emotion. Action. And great soccer. The Bay Oaks Panthers U10 Girls experienced it all, winning the silver division in the Fall 2007 Nor Cal tournament.
Inconsistent play plagued Frederic's forces Saturday. The Panthers started out with a solid 3-0 win over Elk Grove, highlighted by a sweet goal from a sharp angle by Alexius Loman and a booming score covering half the field by Ashley Ryan. The girls then lost two winnable games, 1-2 and 0-1, squandering the outstanding defensive play of Reva Swiedler and relentlessness of Sydney McGillis.
However, poise and resiliency have been characteristics of this team all season and they responded Sunday morning with a sharp performance, dominating field position in a comeback win over the East Diablo Xplosion 2-1. Energized midfield play by Lisa Bertholdt and Savannah Autran, and the sideline speed of Erica MacDonald and Elise Buser stood out in the win. Game two was the first of a pair of thrillers. Tied 0-0 late in the second overtime, Jamie Gomez delivered a beautiful pass to Erica swarming in over the middle, a play the Panthers had attempted a couple of times already in the game. This time it worked. Game over!
Visibly tired yet still playing with intensity in their sixth game in two days (and without all-around star Cecilia Soghikian), the Panthers could have been blown out without Sara Sloan's super goalie play in the final. She blocked several shots in regulation, including a penalty kick and a point blank ricochet. Her play, aided by clutch defensive stops by Masa Peterson, set the stage for the dramatic PK tie breaker. Ashley and Jamie converted their kicks early. Then Sara went to work, stuffing shot after shot, including the crucial fifth PK, to give the Bay Oaks team a 2-1 PK win over Elk Grove. Even the unflappable Frederic smiled in relief at the end of this one!
U9B ROADRUNNERS JRS WIN NORCAL STATE CUP CHAMPIONSHIP
November 18, 2007
The U9 Boys Roadrunners Jrs (RR Jrs) coached by Amado Lozano and assistant Michael Schmitz completed their 1st season by winning the
Norcal State Cup 2007 – Gold Division.
In group play, the RR Jrs made their presence felt by outscoring their opponents 10 to 1.
The team was lead by strong all-out defensive effort and 5 goal keepers to hold their opponents to one goal.
In the first game, the RR Jrs took a 1-0 lead after halftime against Novato United, and during the 2nd half,
Novato United had a chance to equalize on a penalty which was saved. In the second game, after cruising to a 2-0 lead by halftime; the Livingston Lobos would not go away.
They scored within the first five minutes of the second half and were only down by one goal.
The RR Jrs quickly regrouped and finally found their third goal on a penalty kick and went on to win, 3-1.
The RR Jrs advanced to the elimination round after completely decimating the Ballistic U9 Gold team, 6-0.
After securing the 1st seed and advancing directly to the semifinal game,
the RR Jrs had to breakdown the most stubborn team that they’ve encountered during the tournament and went on to win, 1-0 on a picture perfect 25 yard shot which hit the top left corner of the net.
In a one-sided final match, the RR quickly pounced on the San Ramon Gunners 2-0 by halftime and went on to win 5-0.
They utilized their skills, teamwork and used every-inch-of-the-field tactic.
The get-out-of-my-house defense was led by Joseph Rockwell, Gavin Faucette and Darius Wekwerth.
The “engine” (midfields) was led by Amado Lozano III, Lorenzo Chiodo, Roger “Trey” Miller, Max Schmitz,
Owen Sowerwine, Nicky Nguyen, Arlo Bloom and Gyasi Pigott. The forwards were led by Jordan Vasquez and Riley Ellis.
The U9B Roadrunner Jrs finished 7-2 in the first D3-D4 combined playing league.

U11 BOYS UNITED CHAMPS AT WALNUT CREEK OCTOBERFEST
October 28, 2007
The Bay Oaks U11 Boys United tore up the turf at the WCSC Octoberfest this weekend.
Coached by Tom DeWit and assistant Jose Reyes, the United posted wins of 6-1, 8-0, and 2-0 in the preliminaries.
The championship loomed as a match up between two powerhouses, but United dominated Mustang Internazionale in the finals 3-0.
As is representative of this team, all players contributed to the win with an aggressive, heads-up style.
While the scores reflect the ability of this team to score big, United’s defense is scary!
Ghoulish goalkeeping was wicked good and the defense’s speed and ability to relentlessly win the ball back truly haunted their opponents!
Year to date, U11 Boys United are finalists in the Sac United Fall Classic and champions of the Ballistic United Summerfest,
Bay Oaks Labor Day Classic, and WCSC Octoberfest.

Playing in the championship game were the Mustang Mavericks and the Bay Oaks Botafogo. Mustangs were first to strike scoring in the first five minutes of play. Maintaining their composure Botafogo adjusted and then held the Mustang scoreless for the remainder of regular play. Botafogo scored on a beautiful cross from Stephanie Zuniga to Jazzy Edwards ten minutes into the second half. U12G BOMBERS ADVANCE TO QUARTER FINALS AT SAN DIEGO SURF CUP
July 30, 2007
Coaches Momi Assayag and Tom Wilson led the U12 Girls Bombers to the quarterfinals of the prestigious San Diego Surf Cup tournament where they were finally stopped in penalty kicks after battling eventual tourney champions, the SoCal Blues (San Juan Capistrano), to a nil-nil draw in regulation time.
Seeded forth of four, the Bombers emerged from the tough ‘C’ group that included two of the ‘final four’ teams from the Southern California State Cup tournament. The Bombers, lead by a rock solid defensive effort, held four high-scoring teams to only one goal in a 1-2-1 record for the tournament.
In group play, the Bombers matched the SoCal State Cup finalist Newport Beach Slammers to an even fought nil-nil draw. In game two, the Bombers took a 1-0 lead into halftime against the Real So Cal (Agoura, CA), but a fluky second half goal tied the game 1-1 and led to a well-earned draw by both teams. The Bombers advanced to quarter final play by handily defeating the Colorado Rush Nike team 3-0.
In a thrilling quarterfinal elimination game, a tough Bomber defense frustrated a fast and deep Blues team. Taking control of the action, the Bombers created a number of scoring chances in both the first and second half's with balls hitting the post and sailing over the crossbar. However, the Bombers could not match the SoCal Blues in penalty kicks and fell to the eventual tournament champions.
Momi and Tom are back coaching the team in 2007 after a successful campaign in 2006 where the Bombers ended their season as a semifinalist in the Northern California State Cup in U-11 play.
