BAY OAKS UNITED 96 FINALISTS AT CAL CUP 2009
June 19-21, 2009

United 96 Boys, coached by Tom DeWit and assistant Octavio Zuniga, traveled to Sacramento June 19-21 for the 2009 Cal Cup. The team started off the tournament Friday with impressive wins of 4-1 and 4-0.

Both games showcased strong defense, Bay Oaks style passing and finishing and all players contributed to the victories. Blessed with unusually beautiful weather, Saturday’s game was a lopsided match from the start, with United 96 taking the opening touch right down the field for a score. The final was 6-0, Bay Oaks on top.

Sunday morning was a semi-final showdown of two talented Northern California teams, United 96 vs. Santa Rosa. The match was even 0-0 at halftime…nail-biting time. In the second period, United 96 stepped up their ball control and a beautiful feed led to a perfectly angled shot just out of reach of the keeper. United 96 struck again in a flurry of action near the goal, the players hung in to keep control and a pretty spinning toe touch landed the ball in the net. Final score 2-0 United 96.

A few hours later the team came up against a talented Alpine Ruckus team for the championship game. After getting down early and an unlucky red card, the boys couldn’t quite finish off in their usual style, but were proud of their strong showing over the weekend. United 96 looks forward to 2009-2010 soccer!

BOMBERS '95 EARN SECOND PLACE FINISH IN S.F. CUP
May 24, 2009

Bombers 95 May 09The Bay Oaks under-13 girls team, Bombers ’95, earned a second place finish in the San Francisco Cup Tournament, played over Memorial Day weekend. Their first game of the tournament was held Saturday morning in unseasonably cold weather in Golden Gate Park against the Elk Grove Everton. Marisa Rodrigues combined her speed and shooting to score three goals in the first half . Sara Jo Ciapponi added a fourth. Fireworks continued in the second half when Sarah Jo fired a cross from the right corner to the goal, which was headed in by Karla Uribe. Abby Gold scored the sixth and final goal of the game. The Bomber defense controlled Elk Grove to end the game at 6-0.

Game Two, on Saturday afternoon, against Cool Heat, also began with a Marisa Rodrigues goal early in the first half. Maddy Strait added a second when she fired a shot off the goal post and then volleyed the rebound into the net. In the second half, Alex Kalmbach crossed a perfect assist to Marisa Rodrigues, who scored her fifth goal of the day. Carla Uribe scored a second goal for the day to finish the game at 4-0. The Bomber defense, anchored by Emily Rentschler, Kaleigh Allen and Taylor Hobbs allowed no goals for the entire day.

Game Three was played Sunday morning against the Central Valley Explosion, who played a tough, heads up game. The Bombers scored twice in the first half, first by midfielder Maddy Strait and later by forward Sara Jo Ciapponi. The Explosion never let up their pressure against the Bomber’s end of the field, eventually scoring on a free kick. They were still hammering at the door when the game ended 2-1, sending the Bombers to Monday’s final against Central Marin Magic.

The Magic played a fast, strong and skilful game, scoring in the first half on a corner kick and later on a lovely cross, ending the half with a 2-0 lead. Sara Jo Ciapponi gutted out the Bombers only goal of the game, beating the defender in a footrace to gain enough room for a clear shot, which she launched deep into the net. Magic scored again on a penalty kick and a final time on a free kick from the edge of the goalie box. While the 4-1 loss was a disappointment after the first three games, the Bombers played tough to the end. With their scoring tamped down, much of the action shifted to the midfield, where Micaela Scafani, Annie Merritt and Chenoa Lewis kept hopes alive with smart, aggressive play.

BO GOLD 91 (U17B) IN STATE CUP FINAL!
April 26, 2009

The Bay Oaks U17B (Dave Wilkinson) beat San Juan Lightning 2-1 in the Semi-Final match today to place themselves in the Final this coming Sunday at 1pm in Morgan Hill.

In a tense match-up with a spot in the finals on the line, both team began the match playing some decent soccer. San Juan slowly took control of the match, and halfway through the first half they made their advantage tell as they took the lead with a lovely curled free-kick over the wall from 20 yards out to open the scoring. The remainder of the first half saw the Bay Oaks under continued pressure with the backline and goalkeeper Billy Knutsen in outstanding form. At halftime the score remained 1-0.

In the second half, San Juan began where they had left off, controlling most of the possession. However, the Bay Oaks defense stood up to the pressure and San Juan was unable score a second goal while in the ascendency. They were made to pay in the 83rd minute when Christian Cortes finished off the best passing move of the day from the Bay Oaks on a header, with the assist credited to Drew Ranahan, who headed on a wonderful 40 yard pass from Eric Sassano.

The comeback was completed when the Bay Oaks were awarded a penalty kick in the 90th minute that was not disputed by San Jaun. Josue Macias took the responsibility and tucked the ensuing spot kick into the left side netting, sending the keeper the wrong way. The match finished 2-1 for the Bay Oaks in dramatic fashion!

Congratulations to the Bay Oaks Gold '91.

BAY OAKS BLASTERS 97 GIRLS WIN PLACER UNITED PRESTIGE CUP
October 26, 2008

The U11G Blasters 97 continue to build on a great season by winning the Gold Flight of the Placer United Prestige Cup, Oct 25-26. Blasters!

The Blasters first game against Modesto Ajax proved to be their toughest. With great defensive skill, stopper Brianna Lau and defenders Alexius Loman, Dalia Pimentel and Taylor Saechao stopped Modesto’s counterattacks. Late in the game, Aerial Chavarin scored from a through ball from Jordyn Cunningham to earn a tie.

With the tie against Ajax, the Blasters needed to get two 4-0 wins to get maximum points to advance to the finals. Once again the Blasters came through. In their next game against Placer United, Gaby Powell started the scoring with a beautiful shot. Aliyah Walker, Ashley Ryan and Simone Williams kept up the attack with dynamic runs in the 4-0 win.

In their third game, versus Marin FC Rockets, the Blasters once again showed their balance with tough defense and consistent scoring. Pressure from forwards Gracie Duncan and Sunim Chang helped to break down the Marin defense and create opportunities for their teammates. Nayeli Cruz scored twice to help lead the Blasters past the Rockets 4-0.

Blasters2!With identical records, the Blasters and Ajax went to a shootout to determine the bracket winner. In a very impressive showing the Blasters needed only 4 PK’s to win the shootout. Outstanding Blaster goalie, Lorna McElrath, stopped 3 of 4 attempted PK’s. Blaster’s Cruz, Powell, Cunningham and Ryan drilled their shots into the back of the net.

Now with even more confidence following the shoot out, the Blasters took on the Central Valley Heat in the tournament championship. The game was hard fought by both teams but in the end Chavarin scored the only goal to win the game.

The Blasters are coached by Steve Hathaway and Jose Poblete. The team has won two tournament championships and a second place finish at the Magic Cup since the beginning of August. Recently the Blasters capped the fall season with a second place finish in the very competitive NorCal Pemier Fall League and won the league round robin. The Blaster will be getting stronger with the return of Mia Schneider-Martin from a broken bone.

Coching Director Glenn Van Straatum recently stated “The Bay Oaks Blasters 97 progress is remarkable. The team competes with the best teams in the Northern California region through its entry in the new U11 NorCal Premier League. While the competition is fierce, this team easily competes with all the top teams. We’re proud of our players and coachs for their hard work this season in representing Bay Oaks so well.”

U10 BAY OAKS BOMBERS 98 WIN ALLIANCE FC "BATTLE BY THE BAY" TOURNAMENT
September 29, 2008

The U10 Bombers coached by Momi Assayag and Brett Allen went undefeated on their road to winning the Gold flight at the Alliance FC "Battle by the Bay" tournament in Union City, September 27-28, 2008.

Bombers! The Bombers won their flight with dominating wins against Marin FC Rockers Blue, Alliance FC Red Crush, and Gryphons 98 Blue, scoring 15 goals for versus 1 against, thanks to an ironclad defense anchored by sweeper Reina Bonta and solid goal keeping by Nikki Elkin. The defense was tough throughout, thanks to scrappy play by Michaela Allen, Greta Kohls, Tessa Viola and U9 Bay Oaks Storm guest player, Kacy Stoddard. Solid midfield play performances from our twin towers, Hannah and Olivia Fishlow, who teamed up twice on textbook crosses and one touch volleys into the goal. Olivia Mayeda controlled the center and distributed to the wings. Grace Adams and Alia Morris were flying up and down the field as midfield support and providing great defense. The forwards were always on the attack, thanks to stellar performances by speedsters Kira Debro and Blair Bolden, as well as "The Abinator", Abby Cohen. Goal scoring was nicely distributed among the team.

The championship game was against the San Ramon Blue Crush, currently tied for first in the Nor Cal D3-D4 U10 Silver flight along with the Bombers. Though the Bombers dominated play for the most part, and shots on goal were plentiful, the Bombers were tied 1-1 after 50 minutes of regulation. During the 3rd minute into sudden death overtime, Abby Cohen raced up the right wing on a breakaway, pulled the ball back, then crossed the ball to the top of the penalty area, a quick, one-touch pass by Grace Adams to Olivia Mayeda who then drilled the ball into the left-hand corner for the win. The entire Bay Oaks parents section jumped out onto the field with cheers and coach Momi was seen leaping with 'significant air' on the sideline. Go Bay Oaks!!!
