U11 BOYS UNITED TAKE BALLISTIC UNITED SUMMERFEST CHAMPIONSHIP
August 20, 2007

The U11 Boys United team, coached by Tom DeWit and assistant Jose Reyes, gave Coach Jose a festive birthday present by bringing home the championship trophy in the Ballistic United SummerFest in Pleasanton, August 18-20th.

Playing for the first time as a full squad, United took the field on Saturday executing good possession soccer and shut-down defense. Contributions by every member of the team led to a decisive 5-0 victory over Almaden Valley Venom. Saturday afternoon loomed as a show down with expected powerhouse DeAnza Force, but United took over the game in the second half, with 6 different players scoring and only one lucky goal against.

Sunday morning matched United with undefeated Davis Milan. United came up short 0-1 against a very talented and physical team but had their chances. Strapping on those shin guards again for the Sunday afternoon semi-finals, United combined scrappy and tough defense with outstanding goalkeeping to stay in the game. A made-for-TV free kick with 5 minutes left gave United a thrilling 1-0 win over rival BOCA and a trip to the championship game Monday morning.

The finals saw United playing “the beautiful game” in the first half and defensive play in the second half earned them 1-1 tie at the end of regulation time. Adjusting impressively for the overtime period, United totally dominated play for an ultimate 3-1 victory.

An inspired start to the new season!

U10 GIRLS PANTHERS WIN NORCAL STATE CUP CHAMPIONSHIP
November 27, 2007

Drama. Suspense. Emotion. Action. And great soccer. The Bay Oaks Panthers U10 Girls experienced it all, winning the silver division in the Fall 2007 Nor Cal tournament.

Inconsistent play plagued Frederic's forces Saturday. The Panthers started out with a solid 3-0 win over Elk Grove, highlighted by a sweet goal from a sharp angle by Alexius Loman and a booming score covering half the field by Ashley Ryan. The girls then lost two winnable games, 1-2 and 0-1, squandering the outstanding defensive play of Reva Swiedler and relentlessness of Sydney McGillis.

However, poise and resiliency have been characteristics of this team all season and they responded Sunday morning with a sharp performance, dominating field position in a comeback win over the East Diablo Xplosion 2-1. Energized midfield play by Lisa Bertholdt and Savannah Autran, and the sideline speed of Erica MacDonald and Elise Buser stood out in the win. Game two was the first of a pair of thrillers. Tied 0-0 late in the second overtime, Jamie Gomez delivered a beautiful pass to Erica swarming in over the middle, a play the Panthers had attempted a couple of times already in the game. This time it worked. Game over!

Visibly tired yet still playing with intensity in their sixth game in two days (and without all-around star Cecilia Soghikian), the Panthers could have been blown out without Sara Sloan's super goalie play in the final. She blocked several shots in regulation, including a penalty kick and a point blank ricochet. Her play, aided by clutch defensive stops by Masa Peterson, set the stage for the dramatic PK tie breaker. Ashley and Jamie converted their kicks early. Then Sara went to work, stuffing shot after shot, including the crucial fifth PK, to give the Bay Oaks team a 2-1 PK win over Elk Grove. Even the unflappable Frederic smiled in relief at the end of this one!

U9B ROADRUNNERS JRS WIN NORCAL STATE CUP CHAMPIONSHIP
November 18, 2007

The U9 Boys Roadrunners Jrs (RR Jrs) coached by Amado Lozano and assistant Michael Schmitz completed their 1st season by winning the Norcal State Cup 2007 – Gold Division.

In group play, the RR Jrs made their presence felt by outscoring their opponents 10 to 1. The team was lead by strong all-out defensive effort and 5 goal keepers to hold their opponents to one goal.

In the first game, the RR Jrs took a 1-0 lead after halftime against Novato United, and during the 2nd half, Novato United had a chance to equalize on a penalty which was saved. In the second game, after cruising to a 2-0 lead by halftime; the Livingston Lobos would not go away. They scored within the first five minutes of the second half and were only down by one goal. The RR Jrs quickly regrouped and finally found their third goal on a penalty kick and went on to win, 3-1. The RR Jrs advanced to the elimination round after completely decimating the Ballistic U9 Gold team, 6-0.

After securing the 1st seed and advancing directly to the semifinal game, the RR Jrs had to breakdown the most stubborn team that they’ve encountered during the tournament and went on to win, 1-0 on a picture perfect 25 yard shot which hit the top left corner of the net.

In a one-sided final match, the RR quickly pounced on the San Ramon Gunners 2-0 by halftime and went on to win 5-0. They utilized their skills, teamwork and used every-inch-of-the-field tactic. The get-out-of-my-house defense was led by Joseph Rockwell, Gavin Faucette and Darius Wekwerth. The “engine” (midfields) was led by Amado Lozano III, Lorenzo Chiodo, Roger “Trey” Miller, Max Schmitz, Owen Sowerwine, Nicky Nguyen, Arlo Bloom and Gyasi Pigott. The forwards were led by Jordan Vasquez and Riley Ellis.

The U9B Roadrunner Jrs finished 7-2 in the first D3-D4 combined playing league.

U10G BLASTERS BATTLE TO PLACE 3RD IN NORCAL STATE CUP
November 18, 2007

With a busy 6 game schedule over two days the U10 Girls Bay Oaks Blasters fought their way to a 3rd place finish in the 42-team Super Division of the NorCal State Cup. The Blasters came into the tournament seeded 2nd by playing preliminary games in October. On Saturday they were able to win their flight to move into the top group of 8 teams, the Super Division.

On Sunday after starting out strong with goals by Nayeli Cruz and Aerial Chavarin, the Blasters needed to fight off a comeback effort by the Mustang Outlaws. With the help of a beautiful assist by Grace Greening and tenacious midfield play by Aliyah Walker, Mia Schneider-Martin and Simone Williams the Blaster were able to hold off the Outlaws and win 4-3.

The win moved the Blasters into the semi-final versus the Mustang Xplosion. The Xplosion scored within seconds of the opening kick-off. Not to be out done the Blasters tied the game moments later. With two more goals by Taylor Saechao and Katie Orbeta the Blasters took the lead late in the game. The Blasters were unable to stop a late surge by the Xplosion and lost 4-3.

The Blasters finished by playing Sac Atlas Storm to determine the 3rd place team at State Cup. With several great saves, goalie Cynthia Rodriguez helped keep the Blasters in the game. Gabby Powell, Gracie Duncan and Brianna Lau were instumental in leading the Blasters to a 2-1 win and a 3rd place finish in State Cup.

The Blasters are coached by Steve Hathaway and assistant Jose Poblete. The coaches keep it in the family with added help from Lisa Hathaway, Nadia Poblete and Jose Poblete Jr.

U11 BOYS UNITED CHAMPS AT WALNUT CREEK OCTOBERFEST
October 28, 2007

The Bay Oaks U11 Boys United tore up the turf at the WCSC Octoberfest this weekend.

Coached by Tom DeWit and assistant Jose Reyes, the United posted wins of 6-1, 8-0, and 2-0 in the preliminaries. The championship loomed as a match up between two powerhouses, but United dominated Mustang Internazionale in the finals 3-0.

As is representative of this team, all players contributed to the win with an aggressive, heads-up style. While the scores reflect the ability of this team to score big, United’s defense is scary! Ghoulish goalkeeping was wicked good and the defense’s speed and ability to relentlessly win the ball back truly haunted their opponents!

Year to date, U11 Boys United are finalists in the Sac United Fall Classic and champions of the Ballistic United Summerfest, Bay Oaks Labor Day Classic, and WCSC Octoberfest.

August 28, 2007

Coach Bruce Furst's U14 Girls Bay Oaks Bombers continued their winning ways this August. After winning the Tracy Girls Invitational Tournament and placing second in the Novato Summer Classic Tournament, the Bombers this weekend won the Walnut Creek Summerfest tournament.

The Bombers started out Saturday crushing the SMSC Fury 6-0, followed by a 2-1 victory over the Walnut Creek Edge. Sunday morning they beat the Butte Bobcats 4-1 setting up a championship game against their arch rival the ACC Mavericks.

In the final the Bombers dominated play with their patented passing game and their solid defense which only allowed two goals in the entire tournament and shut out the Mavericks with a 2-0 win on goals by Ellie Davis and Bob Wi. The defense was led by keeper Margaret Huntington, flat backs Morgan Kintz and Ayelet Haar and wingbacks Cat Fearing and Roni Owyang. The midfield was led by Kylie Carera, Laura Alberti Ruby Hebert and Bob Wi. The offensive spark was provided by Jenny Budd, Lucia Calthorpe, Hannah Girma, Izzy Merrit, Ellie Davis and Elizabeth Avalos.

U11 GIRLS CHAMPIONS AT MUSTANG STAMPEDE
August 12, 2007

The U11 Girls Botafogo coached by Mario Zuniga and assistant Mike Greening continue their excellent start to the 2007 season winning the Mustang Stampede this weekend.

Playing in the championship game were the Mustang Mavericks and the Bay Oaks Botafogo. Mustangs were first to strike scoring in the first five minutes of play. Maintaining their composure Botafogo adjusted and then held the Mustang scoreless for the remainder of regular play. Botafogo scored on a beautiful cross from Stephanie Zuniga to Jazzy Edwards ten minutes into the second half. Tied after regular play and two golden goal periods, the championship was ultimately secured in penalty kicks.

Year to date the U11G Botafogo are the champions of the NorCal Premier spring league and the Cal Cup and Mustang Stampede tournaments.

U12G BOMBERS ADVANCE TO QUARTER FINALS AT SAN DIEGO SURF CUP
July 30, 2007

Coaches Momi Assayag and Tom Wilson led the U12 Girls Bombers to the quarterfinals of the prestigious San Diego Surf Cup tournament where they were finally stopped in penalty kicks after battling eventual tourney champions, the SoCal Blues (San Juan Capistrano), to a nil-nil draw in regulation time.

Seeded forth of four, the Bombers emerged from the tough ‘C’ group that included two of the ‘final four’ teams from the Southern California State Cup tournament. The Bombers, lead by a rock solid defensive effort, held four high-scoring teams to only one goal in a 1-2-1 record for the tournament.

In group play, the Bombers matched the SoCal State Cup finalist Newport Beach Slammers to an even fought nil-nil draw. In game two, the Bombers took a 1-0 lead into halftime against the Real So Cal (Agoura, CA), but a fluky second half goal tied the game 1-1 and led to a well-earned draw by both teams. The Bombers advanced to quarter final play by handily defeating the Colorado Rush Nike team 3-0.

In a thrilling quarterfinal elimination game, a tough Bomber defense frustrated a fast and deep Blues team. Taking control of the action, the Bombers created a number of scoring chances in both the first and second half's with balls hitting the post and sailing over the crossbar. However, the Bombers could not match the SoCal Blues in penalty kicks and fell to the eventual tournament champions.

Momi and Tom are back coaching the team in 2007 after a successful campaign in 2006 where the Bombers ended their season as a semifinalist in the Northern California State Cup in U-11 play.

Their only loss in the first round to the hosting San Juan Spirits, was later avenged in the championship game which the girls won to bring home the gold. This will be a team to watch this season!

U18 GIRLS REACH STATE CUP FINALS
April 22, 2007

The Bay Oaks U18G team coached by Kevin Boyd and Tom Sutton continued their outstanding State Cup play to reach the Cal North State Cup Championships next Sunday, April 29, at Robertson Park Soccer Stadium in Livermore. In preliminary round play, the Bay Oaks team outscored their opponents 12-1 to advance to the Round of 16 at Morgan Hill two weeks ago, where they dispatched Napa Valley 7-0 in a driving rainstorm.

In the quarterfinals this past weekend, the Bay Oaks team faced a tough SASC Phoenix squad which had gone undefeated in GSSL league play and outscored their opponents in State Cup play by a 21-1 margin. The Bay Oaks U18G again prevailed 5-2 to set the stage for their Semi-Final showdown against former State Cup Champion and reigning Surf Cup Champion Santa Rosa United Gold. The Bay Oaks girls dominated play from the opening whistle, outshooting SRU by a significant margin and shutting them down on defense to post a 1-0 victory and advance to the Championship game.

U11G BAY OAKS BOMBERS FINISH SEASON IN FINAL FOUR FORM
February 2007

Coaches Momi Assayag and Tom Wilson led the Bay Oaks Bombers, the U-11 girls team, to the ‘Final Four’ of the State Cup tournament where they were finally stopped 2-0 by the Mustang Fury of Danville.

The Bombers blazed a path to the Final Four by dispatching five opponents and ringing up 18 goals while giving up nil. In group play the Bombers defeated teams from Clovis, West Contra Costa and the Manteca Rangers to advance to the round of 16 where the Bombers faced a tough test by defeating league rival Castro Valley 1-0. The Bombers next advanced to the final four with a 5-0 win besting an overmatched Placer Prestige team.

In the semi-finals, the Bombers lost to the Mustang Fury, the then top-ranked team in Northern California, who scored an early goal and subsequently set a workman like pace that the Bombers could not break open. Earlier in the year the Bombers made the finals of both the NorCal Premier soccer tourney and the top bracket of the Lodi Referee tourney.

For the entire season, the Bombers went undefeated in league play and were crowned District 4 Champions. The team made the finals five times in eight tourney tries over the season where they earned three gold and two silver places. Earlier in the summer the Bombers were crowned champions at the San Ramon Valley Cup, won the Bay Oaks Labor Day Classic and won the Walnut Creek Halloween tourney.

Momi and Tom are back coaching the team in 2007 with high hopes in U-12 play.

U14G BAY OAKS BLASTERS TAKE GOLD IN TWO FALL TOURNAMENTS
October 30, 2006

The Bay Oaks Blasters U14 girls team had a very successful tournament season this fall, going undefeated while winning both the Hayward Fall Classic and the Lodi Referee's Fall Classic. In the final of the Lodi Tournament this past weekend, the Blasters defeated a strong Marin team to claim a 3-1 Championship victory. In September, the Blasters defeated Hayward by an identical 3-1 margin to win Championships in back-to-back months.

Starting in August, with a second place finish in the Mission Viejo Tournament, the Blasters have played in either the championship or consolation game of all 6 tournaments that they entered. Possession soccer, high pressure defense, outstanding goalkeeping, and team chemistry have kept the Blasters competitive and in every game. Coaches Steve Hathaway, Jose Poblete Sr., goalkeeper coach Jose Poblete Jr., and AD Glenn Van Straatum have been very impressed with the hard work and dedication of the entire team.

GHANA / BAY OAKS EXHIBITION MATCH A MAJOR SUCCESS
October 19, 2006

Over 300 people lined the sidelines of Hornet Field yesterday to watch the Women's National Team of Ghana square off against the Bay Oaks U18 Girls team coached by Kevin Boyd, and they were treated to an outstanding exhibition match. The women from Ghana ultimately prevailed in the contest, 4-3, but the Bay Oaks women can hold their heads high for their competitive play against this strong international squad. In fact, the Bay Oaks team scored more goals against the Black Queens than any of Ghana's prior exhibition match competitors, including the SF Nighthawks, the Sacramento Storm, and the California Golden Bears.

The exhibition match was part of a tour of the SF Bay Area by the Black Queens in preparation for the upcoming African National Championships at the end of October and the Women's World Cup in 2007. At the end of the goodwill match, the Bay Oaks women presented the Black Queens with Bay Oaks warmup T-shirts as the both teams congratulated each other at midfield and posed for group pictures. The Hornet Field was mowed and striped especially for the exhibition, and the weather cooperated with warm temperatures. Spectators saw some beautiful soccer on both sides of the pitch. All in all, the exhibition match proved to be a major success!

BAY OAKS U13 BOYS SWEEP TWO SEPTEMBER TOURNAMENTS
October 5, 2006

September was a good month for the Bay Oaks U13 Boys team coached by Frederic Autran. The team started out the month by winning the Bay Oaks Labor Day Classic, defending its title from last year. The boys won bracket play in convincing fashion by outscoring their opponents 19-0 to advance to the finals against traditional rival ACC Mavericks. Regulation time of the championship game ended in a 1-1 tie, and remained tied through the first overtime period, but the Bay Oaks squad scored a golden goal shortly into the second overtime period to give the team the championship!

At the end of the month, the team dominated competition to win the Lodi Referee's Fall Classic, again defending their title from last year. The team swept through bracket play by a combined score of 16-0, and they scored early and often to defeat Davis Legacy 5-1 in the final and earn their second championship in September. Coach Autran was pleased that 10 different players scored goals during the two tournaments, and many of the goals came off crosses and were "team" goals rather than the effort of one player.

The team dedicated the Lodi tournament to its former coach, Bruce Furst, who was undergoing a surgical procedure that weekend. The team was thrilled that Bruce had a successful surgery and a speedy recovery, and Bruce now proudly displays a very large trophy in his bedroom. The team has asked for the trophy back, but to date, Bruce has not returned it.

U12B EARTHQUAKES WIN CHAMPIONSHIP AT LABOR DAY CLASSIC
September 4, 2006

The Bay Oaks Earthquakes, coached by Frédéric Autran and Kevin Rockwell, won the U12 Boys Class I division at the Labor Day Classic. The team opened with a narrow 0-1 loss to an impressive San Francisco United team. The Quakes bounced back Saturday afternoon against Santa Clara Sporting, winning 3-2. The Bay Oaks scored two first-half goals before Sporting tied the game in the second period. With just two minutes to play, the Quakes launched a long through pass that a Bay Oaks forward ran down and shot home for the victory. With the victory and loss, the Quakes reached the semifinal as a second-place team. Sunday morning the Quakes beat Marin Central 2-0. This earned the hosts a rematch against SF United, but this time the Quakes played a far better game compared with the first attempt, and they never let United get into its stride. In spite of the Quakes having the upper hand, United scored first, midway through the second half; but the Quakes never stopped fighting and two late goals gave the victory—and the title—to the Bay Oaks.

U12G SPEED DEMONS WIN CHAMPIONSHIP AT CASTRO VALLEY SHOOTOUT

August 21, 2006

New Coach Jon Nishimoto is off to a good start with the U12G Speed Demons. On August 19 & 20, his team went undefeated winning the Castro Valley Summer Shootout. The Speed Demons defeated Palo Alto Blue 95, the ACC Mavericks, and the Fremont Flash in group play before beating the host Castro Valley Ravens in the Sunday afternoon Championship. During the 4-game tournament the girls' stingy defense did not allow a goal while their offense scored 12 times. Earlier in the year the team finished 3rd in NorCal Premier's tough Spring league. Jon and Assistant Coach Michael Ranahan both look forward to this Fall's GSSL schedule, where the girls have been Gold flighted.

U12G BLADES OFF TO GOOD START IN NOVATO CLASSIC
August 21, 2006

The U12G Blades got the season off to a good start by capturing fourth place in the Novato Classic on August 19th and 20th. In their first tournament of the season, the Blades managed two ties, a win and a last-minute loss. Strong defense was key to the Blades' games with only two goals allowed in their four games, including a 0-0 tie against eventual tournament champion Central Marin Magic. Another tie against MVLA and a dominating 5-0 win over Elk Grove put the Blades into the consolations, where a last-minute goal by the Los Altos Thundercats finally stopped them, 2-1. Blades coaches Bernardo Lopez and Geo Nordin expect the team to score more goals this fall and to move up in Cal-North rankings.

U11G BAY OAKS BOMBERS TAKE SILVER IN LODI
September 24, 2006

Momi Assayag and Tom Wilson led the Bombers to the finals for a third time in five tourney tries last weekend in Lodi where the girls took home silver medals in the tourney's top flight of teams. In qualifying play the Bombers defeated the Turlock Tornados 5-0, the Davis Velocity 3-0 and the Livermore Crew 2-1 to take the four-team bracket.

Facing the Danville Mustang Fury 96 team in the finals, the Bombers evened up the score at 1-1 at half time by controlling play, however, the Mustangs took advantage of their opportunities in the second half to win the final 3-1 under a hot Central Valley sun.

Earlier in the summer the Bombers were crowned champions at the San Ramon Cup and won the Bay Oaks Labor Day Classic. All told, Momi Assayag and Tom Wilson have coached the Bombers in five tournaments representing 45 top girls teams from throughout Northern California, where the Bombers compiled a 14-2-2 record, scoring 57 goals while giving up only 10 on the way to earning two gold medals and a silver medal.

U14G BREAKAWAYS READY FOR STATE CUP
March 19, 2006

The U14 Girls Breakaways warmed up for State Cup by winning the Lodi Spring Classic Tournament this weekend. For the championship game, the Breakaways, coached by Eric George, lined up against the defending state champion Mustang Spirit. After a tense and goal-less first half, the Breakaways scored midway through the second half, sending the sideline into pandemonium. But Mustang showed why they are state champs by equalizing within a few minutes. At the end of regulation time the score was tied 1-1. Two scoreless overtime periods were played with few shots and strong defensive play. In the penalty kick phase, after the first five kickers, the teams were still tied 4-4. But in the end, after nine kickers, the Breakaways prevailed 5-4 for a dramatic victory.

The Breakaways will meet Mustang again next weekend in the first round of State Cup. Go Breakaways!

AN IMPRESSIVE RUN FOR THE SPEED DEMONS
January 31, 2006

Following a very strong showing last Fall with a first place in the District 4 Competitive Playing League, the U11 Girls ("Speed Demons"), coached by Fernando Romero, are not slowing down... A few weeks ago, they eliminated San Ramon Azurre 2003 and Elk Grove Pride 95 Blue to reach the Final Four of the NorCal Cup (Gold Flight), where they will face the Central Valley Chilipeppers in the semi-finals on February 4th in Clovis.

The team has made an equally impressive State Cup run, and they have yet to be scored upon! Two weekends ago in Turlock, they easily won their three games - 3-0 vs MVLA Fusion, 10-0 vs CVSA Cyclone and 4-0 vs Tornados United. In a second round game last weekend, they shutout Elk Grove 1-0 to maintain their streak while advancing to the Round of 16 on February 11.

Congratulations to the team for their outstanding performance!

U13 GIRLS BLAST TO CASTRO VALLEY TOURNAMENT VICTORY
January 20, 2006

Using a tight defense and a gambling offense, the U-13 Bay Oaks Blasters, coached by Steve Hathaway, won the Castro Valley Winter Shoot Out January 7-8 with a 1-0 victory under the lights.

It was the Blasters’ third straight shutout victory, in their fifth game of the weekend. It capped a post-season resurgence for a team that had not been at full strength all year. The Blasters competed in the GSSL gold flight last season with three of 15 players out due to serious injury. The best evidence of the rebound came with victories over two teams who had frustrated the under-strength Blasters during the fall season.

Earlier in their season, the Blasters were finalists at the Mission Viejo Classic, and Semi-finalists in the Livermore Girls Fall Classic and the Bay Oaks Labor Day Classic.

Congratulations on a successful season!

BOYS U15 TEAM CELEBRATES WINS IN LONG BEACH AND SONOMA
August 22, 2005

Coach Edgar Erker's boys U15 team beat the highly ranked Valley United SC Blast 3-1 to win the California Sun & Surf International Soccer Tournament in Long Beach August 13-15. The team played a grueling six games over three days, and in the final three games played the best team soccer it has ever put together, with a variety of people scoring decisive goals.  Ten of the team members, pictured above, also won the Sonoma Six-A-Side Tournament on July 9. In the finals they trailed 3-1 at half, only to score 8 goals in the first five minutes of the second half. Thanks to literally a last-second goal by one defender, every one of the team members scored.

This team has a cross-generational connection with Bay Oaks, as coach Erker himself played Bay Oaks and he coached two of his present players' fathers when they played. Edgar declines to opine whether the fathers or sons were better.

June 17, 2005

The Bay Oaks U19 boys, coached by Andy Bonchonsky, proudly defended the club colors last weekend in Santa Clara, losing 1–2 to the San Juan Predators—an all-college-player team—in the 2005 State Cup semifinals. Despite playing without two of their three forwards and missing a PK in the middle of the second half, the boys almost pulled off a date in the finals. In the morning quarterfinals, they came from behind to defeat West Valley Inter 2–1.

Congratulations to all for a great run! Go Bay Oaks!

BAY OAKS BUILDS TOP PROGRAM FOR UNDER 18/19 GIRLS AND BOYS TEAMS
March 21, 2005

Bay Oaks continues to strengthen the training program for its oldest players.  Two years ago, the club hired Kevin Boyd, the head women’s soccer coach at Cal, to coach the U-18 Girls team to offer these players the best training possible as they prepared themselves for playing at the next level.  Bay Oaks continued the development of its oldest age groups last year when Andy Bonchonsky, Bay Oaks Director of Coaching, assumed the coaching position for the U18/19 Boys team as a complement to the girls side. Now a third top-level coach has been added to the group.

This year, Tom Sutton will coach a second U-18 Girls team. Tom has been coaching youth soccer for more than 20 years including high school, club, and ODP boys and girls teams.  Tom had a year-round soccer training facility in Colorado before moving to the Bay Area in 1998.  In Colorado, Tom led six different club teams that he coached (including Colorado Rush and Littleton United) to the State Cup finals, winning five of them.  Tom has worked with Bay Oaks players the last three years, including a U-19 Girls team that went to the State Cup finals, losing only to the team that ultimately finished second in the nation that year.  The past two years, Tom has worked with Fred Bicknell coaching the Bay Oaks Strykers U-17 team, who were State Cup semifinalist last year.

Tryout dates and times for all three teams are posted on the tryout schedule

2005 STATE CUP: U11 AND U12 BOYS TEAMS REACH THE FINAL FOUR!
February 25, 2005

Last weekend, the U11 boys team coached by Bruce Furst and the U12 boys coached by Ajit Rana played in the final four of the 2005 State Cup . . . and both went down in their semifinals after hard-fought games. The U11 boys lost 2-3 to the Mustang Reds and the U12 boys lost 0-4 to Merced United Arsenal. This is the first time younger Bay Oaks boys teams advanced to the semifinals of the State Cup.

To reach the last four, the U11 boys defeated Clovis California Odyssey Red 1-0 in the round of 16 and Placer United Prestige Gold 4-1 in the quarterfinals. The U12 boys outscored Mission Hayward Tecos 3-0 in the round of 16 and eliminated Santa Rosa United Gold 1-0 in the quarters.

Let’s not forget Fabian Plascencia’s U13 boys, who were eliminated by Placer United Prestige Gold (0-3) in the second round; and Momi Assayag’s U11 girls, who barely lost (1-2) to Butte United Bobcats in the round of 16; as well as Kwadwo Boateng’s U13B boys, Steve Hathaway’s U12 girls, Diane Chann’s U12B girls, and Eric George’s U13 girls, who carried the Bay Oaks colors very high in the first round.

Congratulations to all the players, parents, coaches, managers, and supporters for working so hard throughout the year. A special thank you goes out to both Bruce and Ajit. Both will be stepping down next year as head coaches and we wish them luck.

Go Bay Oaks!

2005 STATE CUP STARTS WELL FOR OUR YOUNG BAY OAKS!

February 4, 2005

Four Bay Oaks teams went through the always challenging first round of the CYSA-N State Cup.

For their first experience in this competition, Bruce Furst’s U11 boys dominated their three opponents (3-1 vs Napa Aztecas, 6-0 vs Clovis California Odyssey White, and 4-2 vs West Contra Costa Invaders) to reach the round of 16, where they will meet Clovis California Odyssey Red on February 12. Same story for Ajit Rana’s U12 boys, who outscored the Modesto Ajax United Screamin Eagles (6-1), Mustang United (1-0), and Hayward Charruas (3-0) and will next play against Mission Hayward Tecos.

Fabian Plascencia’s U13 boys moved to a second-round game with two wins (2-0 vs Pleasanton Ballistic United and 2-1 vs Novato Fury). Congratulations also to Momi Assayag’s U11 girls, who will play the Butte United Bobcats in the round of 16 after a very good start (5-0 vs DeAnza Spirit, 2-0 vs Mt. Diablo Velocity, and 0-0 vs Livermore Explosion).

IMPRESSIVE FALL LEAGUE RESULTS FOR BAY OAKS

December 1, 2004

The fall season officially came to an end a few weeks ago. It's now a good time to measure the performances achieved by some of our Bay Oaks teams in their respective leagues.

In the District 4 Competitive Playing League (D4 CPL) gold flight, Bruce Furst’s U11 boys were crowned champions for the second year in a row after a very nice competition with ACC Mavericks and Hayward America. Fernando Romero’s U10 girls totally dominated their subject, finishing 1st without losing a game (9-0-1) and allowing just 3 goals against. Frédéric Autran’s U10 boys finished 2nd behind a strong ACC Mavericks Traviesos team, and Ricardo Ramirez’s U10 girls (half U9) ended in an honorable 5th position.

In the Golden State Soccer League (GSSL), nine Bay Oaks teams finished on the podium.

Congratulations to our gold flight winners, Ajit Rana’s U12 boys and Fabian Plascencia’s undefeated U13 boys, and to our silver flight winners, Steve Hathaway’s U12 girls and Eric George’s U13 girls, both of which will be promoted to gold flight next season. Miguel Marroquin’s U14 and Glenn Van Straatum’s U16 boys teams finished second in their gold flight. On the girls’ side, Peter Hayton’s U15 (gold), Fred Bicknell’s U17 (gold), and Mike Gonzalez’s U14 (silver) teams ended their seasons in the 3rd spot.

Using a system of points allocated to each team according to finals standings, the Bay Oaks boys (7 teams) finished #1 out of 20 clubs playing in the GSSL Gold flight, and the Bay Oaks girls (5 teams) finished #4 overall out of 16 clubs—a good sign for the upcoming State Cup!

Two Bay Oaks players, Caroline Dagley and Christopher Harris, have been selected in their respective 90 ODP Player Pools by the US Youth Soccer Region 4 (West). This season, Caroline plays in Kevin Boyd’s U18G team and Chris in Efrain Burgos’s U15B.

GOOD TOURNAMENT RESULTS FOR BAY OAKS TEAMS
November 5, 2004

This tournament season has been particularly successful for our colors:

BOYS

The U12 team, coached by Ajit Rana, won two tournaments in September: the Almaden Fall Classic and the Bay Oaks Labor Day Classic. The U13 boys coached by Fabian Plascencia were also Bay Oaks Labor Day Classic champions and reached the final at the San Ramon Valley Cup and at the Golden Gate Invitational in San Francisco. Glenn Van Straatum's U16 team (see picture) reached the final at both the Ballistic United Summer Classic and the Almaden Fall Classic. And let's not forget Bruce Furst's U11 boys, who lost by the closest margin against ACC Mavericks in the Bay Oaks Labor Day Classic final; came in 3rd at the San Ramon Valley Cup, the Lodi Soccer Referees Fall Classic, and the Mustang Headless Horseman Tournament; and finished 4th at the Santa Rosa Champions Cup.

GIRLS

Congratulations to Steve Hathaway’s U12 team, Bay Oaks Labor Day Classic champions and semifinalists in San Ramon; to Courtney Longua's U16 team (see picture below), which won the Lodi Girls Fall Classic;  to Mike Gonzalez' U14 team, which finished 2nd at Lodi; and to Momi Assayag's U11 team, which finished 2nd at the San Ramon Valley Cup and at the Bay Oaks Labor Day Classic.

FOUR BAYS OAKS BARCA U16B PLAYERS GET ODP RECOGNITION
October 26, 2004

The Super Y League selected three Bay Oaks Barca players coached by Glenn Van Straatum for spots on the Pacific Division Super Y Olympic Development Program (ODP) roster: Andres Ponce and Ryan Sheirich, as well as Joseph Moleski-Poz as an alternate. Andres Ponce and fellow Barca player Leslie Powell also have been invited back for the CYSA State ODP '88 tryouts in March 2005. Congratulations to ALL!

Bay Oaks U12 Boys Continue Their Winning Ways at Almaden Champions Cup
September 26, 2004

In late September each year, the Almaden Champions Cup Division I Soccer Tournament invites the best soccer clubs to play in Morgan Hill. This year, at the 26th annual Cup on September 25–26, the Bay Oaks U12 boys brought home the gold against competition that included nationally ranked teams.

A series of ties on day one kept the Bay Oaks uncertain of their tournament position by the day’s close. In an early morning kickoff game, the Central Valley Outlaws scored two goals in the second half, leading to a 2-2 tie against the Bay Oaks. That afternoon’s game was an instance of déjà vu, as the Merced United Arsenals scored a goal in the final 5 minutes of play against the Bay Oaks and caused yet another 2-2 tie.

However, hard work and perseverance inevitably become the main determinant of any team’s success in tournament play.  Remembering this lesson from their previous victory at the Bay Oaks Labor Day Classic three weeks ago, the team rallied by fortifying their defensive strategy. So on day two, the boys guaranteed their advancement to the championship game by racking up eight goals in a shutout match against Windsor Ajax.

This decisive win earned the Bay Oaks a leg up in the final championship game against the San Ramon Santos. Goals from Ajaya Rana, Carlyle Garrich, and Max Oldham secured the Bay Oaks’ 4-1 victory, but the team’s secret weapon was the coordinated strategy of team play by forwards, midfielders, and defenders alike.

This season, coach Ajit Rana has assembled a squad that shows balance between an aggressive attack and a near-impermeable defensive line. Of the Almaden tournament, Rana explained, “The scenario that got us to the final, with so many ties, showed the quality of the teams in the tournament. But this team earned the win; they were focused and they showed their maturity.”

After their tournament victory, the team danced exuberantly around their coaches as Rana held up the gold prize cup and told the exhausted but jubilant squad, “When you want it and you work for it, nothing is impossible.”

The Bay Oaks U12 boys team remains undefeated this season.

U16 TEAM TAKES SECOND IN FINAL MOMENTS at Almaden Champions Cup

September 26

In other tournament news, the Bay Oaks Barca U16 boys, coached by Glenn Van Straatum and Juan Ceja, captured a second-place berth in Morgan Hill, entering the finals with a decisive lead in points earned, but ending the tournament with a nail-biter against California Odyssey, going down in the final minutes by a score of 0-1.

TWO BAYS OAKS PLAYERS IN THE US NATIONAL TEAM POOL!
June 3, 2004

Victor Cortez and Demitrius Omphroy are wearing the Bays Oaks colors at the highest national level... Demitrius, a forward, was one of the 18 players selected for the 2004 US Youth Soccer ODP Adidas 1989 All-Star Team that just toured Europe, playing against top international youth clubs, such as Bayer Leverkussen, Borussia Dortmund, Schalke 04 (Germany), Anderlecht, Brugge and Mechelen (Belgium)... Meanwhile, Victor, a midfielder, was selected in the U15 US National Team and played at the 25th Dallas Cup, one of the most prestigious youth tournaments in the country.

We will follow their achievements throughout the year...

BAYS OAKS TEAMS PERFORM WELL AT 2004 STATE CUP!
June 2, 2004

Congratulations go to the Bay Oaks Bombers (U13G), coached by d'Alary Dalton, who reached the State Cup Final for the 3rd year in a row! After an intense game, they finally lost 1-2 against Central Valley Mercury, after eliminating the San Francisco Aftershocks (1-0 in the semis), the Pleasanton Rage, the defending Champions (3-2 in the quarters) and the Mustang Mavericks (1-0 in the round of 16)...

Our U15 Boys, coached by Willie Ortiz, ended their amazing run in the semi-final, losing 1-2 against the future winners, the Santa Cruz Co. Bobcats. Prior to this they beat Diablo Valley (1-0) in the quarter-finals and Turlock (5-1) in the round of 16... Two other Bay Oaks teams made it to the semis. Kevin Boyd's (U18G) team lost 2-3 to De Anza Force, the soon to be crowned champions, after beating De Anza Sharks (1-0) in the 1/4 and Bullard FC (2-1) in the round of 16. Fred Bicknell's (U16G) team, the Bay Oaks Strykers, reached the last four by defeating their "club mates", the Bay Oaks Bombers (3-0) in the round of sixteen and the Mustang Roadrunners (1-0) in the quarters. In the semis, they lost 1-5 to the future State Champions, the Pleasanton Rage...

Cheers as well for our 2 teams that made it to the 1/4 (U14GB and U17G) and our 4 teams that reached the round of 16 (U13GB, U15G, U16GB and U17B)... For the 1st time ever, a total of 10 Bay Oaks teams advanced to the second round (top 16) in this 2004 edition of the State Cup.

BAY OAKS BOMBERS U13G TEAM MAKES IT TO THE STATE CUP FINALS!
February 16, 2004

BombersOn Feb. 14, 2004 at the Turlock Sports Complex, the Bay Oaks Bombers U13 Girls played in the Quarter Finals of the State Cup. They played a very intense game against Pleasanton Rage, the 2003 State Cup Champions. Pleasanton Rage won in the State Cup last year against the Bay Oaks Bombers in the Finals.

During the first half of the game, the Bay Oaks Bombers dominated the Pleasanton Rage with a 2-0 score in the first half with two goals by Mikaela Freeman. Pleasanton Rage answered back in the second half, scoring two goals. The score was tied, 2-2. During the second overtime period, Taylor Lee scored the golden goal, advancing the Bay Oaks Bombers into the semifinals with a final score of 3-2. This was indeed a sweet Valentine’s gift for the team, coaches and parents.

On Feb. 15th, the Bay Oaks Bombers played the San Francisco Aftershocks in the semifinals. During this game, the Bay Oaks Bombers dominated the game, but couldn't get past San Francisco Aftershocks great goalie. The teams went through two ten-minute overtimes without scoring a goal. Finally the game ended with penalty kicks. Bay Oaks Bombers 4, San Francisco Aftershocks 2. The Bay Oaks Bombers makes history for the Bay Oaks organization. The first team to make it to the State Cup finals, three years in a row. The State Cup finals will be held in Petaluma on Saturday, February 28th.

We wish d’Alary Dalton and the Bay Oaks Bombers U13 girls team continued success in their State Cup run!

February 10, 2004

On January 17, 2004, at the Turlock Sports Complex, the Bay Oaks Bombers dominated the El Dorado United with a 5-0 win. The Bombers went on that afternoon to shutout Mill Valley Rockers with a 1-0 win. The next day, the Bombers fought a hard battle with North Fresno Central Valley Friction ending in a tie of 2-2. Bay Oaks Bombers advanced to the Round of 16. On January 31, 2004, the Bay Oaks Bombers played the #1 State Ranked, Mustang Mavericks and won 1-0, advancing them to the Quarterfinals. The Quarter Finals will be held in Turlock on Feb. 14, 2004. The Bombers will be playing against Pleasanton Rage, the previous State Cup winners for 2003 in which the Bombers were the finalist. Tremendous performance from the players and the coaches. We wish d'Alary Dalton and her team the best for continued success in their State Cup run.

Breakers The Bay Oaks Breakers played in Castro Valley on Jan. 17th and Jan. 18th, advancing to the Round of 16 with wins in the first round of State Cup. The Breakers played the Healdsburg team and tied with a score of 1-1. The Breakers second game was with the Mustang Silver and they tied 0-0, with superb defensive efforts from both teams. On the second day, the Breakers had a “must-win-to advance” game against DVSC. The Breakers shot in a goal with less than one minute remaining to win the game with a 2-1 win and advancing the Breakers to the Round of 16. At the Round of 16, the Breakers were defeated by Turlock Tornados, which ended their successful run at the State Cup. This was a great run for the Bay Oaks Breakers, coached by Mike Gonzalez. Great job Breakers!
